How SEO has changed since Penguin 2.0 by Peter Dimaira of Public Relations Done Right

What many Companies are finding out since Google has updated it’s algorithm to Penguin 2.0  is that SEO (search engine optimization the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine) may not be the way of the future. I am sure after companies have spent millions if not trillions of dollars on SEO, to only be disappointed by the recent change; where do we go from here? Most companies are fearful of investing money into an uncertain new media like Social and Mobile Media Marketing.

First; what is Penguin 2.0 and how has it changed the way Google ranks its pages? Google’s chief resource for fighting spam, Matt Cutts, has said that Penguin focused on penalizing sites that use black-hat techniques and rewarding sites that are offering a great visitor experience. Translation: if you’ve done dubious activities such as buying mass links, spamming low quality directory sites with your links, or paying an intern to leave hundreds of comments on blogs, there’s a good chance your site was affected. At the same time, smaller businesses that have engaged in developing quality content, building ethical links, and avoided sketchy techniques that would yield short-term gains should have received a boost in the overall search rankings.

Additionally, Cutts has stated that Penguin 2.0 drilled deeper into websites to look for spam; analyzing internal pages as opposed to just the homepage of websites. This was actually a pretty interesting revelation, because it wasn’t previously known to the SEO community that Penguin 1.0 only analyzed inbound link profiles of domain homepages. The fact that internal pages are now analyzed means that black-hat web spam tactics such as manipulative link building to internal pages won’t escape Google’s ever-seeing eye.

However “Authority Site’s” are making a huge impact on page rankings and are now ranking even more quickly than they did ever before. Therefore, if you use these authority sites as “Para Sites”, they can drive traffic to your “Home Site” for your targeted keywords in a fairly short period of time (Some as quick as 5 minutes to 3 weeks)

As much as I love to help people better understand how to market companies efficiently, I don’t want to reveal all of my secrets because then I would have no more reason for banter. J These sites below are all sites that reportedly have a very good impact on your rankings.

1. YouTube

2. Amazon (ebooks)

3. Askville.Amazon.com (Similar to Yahoo Answers)

4. Facebook Pages

5. Squidoo (Works well but have cracked down and have started banning accounts)

6. Meetup.com ($12/month) The group page ranks very easily

7. LinkedIn (The Company Profile Page)

8. Twitter Profile

9. Tumblr (May be able to pull in RSS feeds)

10. Myspace Account

11. Blogspot

12. BBB.org (This is an authority for Google+ Local Business Pages)

13. Dailymotion.com (Video site that is less strict than YouTube)

14. Metacafe.com (Video site that is less strict than YouTube)

15. Pinterest Profile (Rank Really Well)

16. Yahoo Answers (You can ask the question yourself, and then write the answer yourself)

17. Itunes Stores

18. Google+ Accounts

19. EvenBrite.com (Similar to Meetup.com)

20. Craigslist.org (Can rank well for local listings. Downside is that they can be flagged and they expire. Good for short-term rankings)

21. Ireport.cnn.com (Can create an account as a reporter. Really easy to rank these pages)

22. Press Releases (These are possibly the best ParaSites, besides YouTube.)

23. Blog.co.uk (High authority site for the UK market)

24. Yelp.com (THE BEST For Local Businesses and mobile visitors) 25. sites.google.com (Another Google Property)

26. slideshare.net

Now the question is; what does a company do to get themselves prepared for a successful marketing launch utilizing these applications. First you need a person or company that has diversified talents; not just specializing in one area, but all or most areas of Public Relations that have the capabilities to develop a strategy focused on the company’s needs. The days of the old timer saying to you, “we rely only on word of mouth and were doing just great.” Don’t worry about them because if they knew anything about business or even one iota of marketing they would know that they have to take pride in their appearance and in today’s day and age that is the Internet 80-90% of the time. The other is how a company presents itself Business to consumer or business to business. (Excuse the side tangent I will save this for another entry). Now, when you use your problem solving skills, and already knowing that you have to make a big impact to generate a following; what is the first priority? You will need to find someone with a full working knowledge of Social Media, Basic Design Knowledge, Writing Skills, and Blogging Capabilities. If you can find a talented writer the better off you are. Based upon the fact that Google’s Penguin 2.0 is an Algorithmic pattern (a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, esp. by a computer). It is a numbers game in the sense that you are going to see better results by putting out more to get back more (in laymen’s terms). However; you must have original and creative content and lots of it! Then comes the interactivity part and for those of you that are on Facebook and other Social Networks you may see how people post pictures and other content with quotes, tags, and other unique content to capture someone’s attention and persuade them to spread the word. Please Google subject heading and you can follow my steps or if you still haven’t a clue you can contact Public Relations Done Right and we can help you for a reasonable rate or teach you to do it for yourself.

Until next time…

A basic SEO Explanation from Peter @ PRDR South Florida Online Marketing for Small Companies

New to SEO? Need to polish up your knowledge? The Beginner's Guide to SEO has been read over 1 million times and provides comprehensive information you need to get on the road to professional quality SEO. Search engines have two major functions - crawling & building an index, and providing answers by calculating relevancy & serving results. Imagine the World Wide Web as a network of stops in a big city subway system. Each stop is its own unique document (usually a web page, but sometimes a PDF, JPG or other file). The search engines need a way to “crawl” the entire city and find all the stops along the way, so they use the best path available – links. Crawling and Indexing Crawling and indexing the billions of documents, pages, files, news, videos and media on the world wide web. Providing Answers Providing answers to user queries, most frequently through lists of relevant pages, through retrieval and rankings. “The link structure of the web serves to bind all of the pages together.” Through links, search engines’ automated robots, called “crawlers,” or “spiders” can reach the many billions of interconnected documents. Once the engines find these pages, they next decipher the code from them and store selected pieces in massive hard drives, to be recalled later when needed for a search query. To accomplish the monumental task of holding billions of pages that can be accessed in a fraction of a second, the search engines have constructed datacenters all over the world. These monstrous storage facilities hold thousands of machines processing large quantities of information. After all, when a person performs a search at any of the major engines, they demand results instantaneously – even a 1 or 2 second delay can cause dissatisfaction, so the engines work hard to provide answers as fast as possible. Search engines are answer machines. When a person looks for something online, it requires the search engines to scour their corpus of billions of documents and do two things – first, return only those results that are relevant or useful to the searcher’s query, and second, rank those results in order of perceived usefulness. It is both “relevance” and “importance” that the process of SEO is meant to influence. To a search engine, relevance means more than simply finding a page with the right words. In the early days of the web, search engines didn’t go much further than this simplistic step, and their results suffered as a consequence. Thus, through evolution, smart engineers at the engines devised better ways to find valuable results that searchers would appreciate and enjoy. Today, 100s of factors influence relevance, many of which we’ll discuss throughout this guide. How Do Search Engines Determine Importance? Currently, the major engines typically interpret importance as popularity – the more popular a site, page or document, the more valuable the information contained therein must be. This assumption has proven fairly successful in practice, as the engines have continued to increase users’ satisfaction by using metrics that interpret popularity. Popularity and relevance aren’t determined manually. Instead, the engines craft careful, mathematical equations – algorithms – to sort the wheat from the chaff and to then rank the wheat in order of tastiness (or however it is that farmers determine wheat’s value). These algorithms are often comprised of hundreds of components. In the search marketing field, we often refer to them as “ranking factors” Moz crafted a resource specifically on this subject – Search Engine Ranking Factors. Googlers recommend the following to get better rankings in their search engine: Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as cloaking. Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link. Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content. Make sure that your
